Mitzi

At the risk of being ridiculed and made fun of, I wanted to do a post about my dog Mitzi. We've had her for over 12 years since she was just a tiny puppy. She was always such a good dog. Here she is (in front) with Oscar and Dottie several years ago, back when she was healthy. The kids always made fun of her because her ears were so big. But I still thought she was cute. Mitzi LOVED to sit in the front room window so she could see outside and be in the sunshine. She'd lie up there for hours until the sun went down almost every day. If I ever moved the furniture so she couldn't get up there, she'd be so sad.

Yesterday, we decided it was time to put her down. She has been sick and unhealthy for a while and was just getting worse. I didn't want to wait until she was completely unable to do anything to put her down. She was already in pain and was totally blind in one eye and couldn't see that well out of the other one. The vet said it looked like she had a growth inside the eye that was blind and that the other one had a cataract. Besides that, she had other issues also. Anyway, it was a sad day for me. We gave her one last bath, drove to Holbrook, and Jim's nephew's wife Abbie Reidhead, who is a vet, helped us say goodbye to her. This picture was on the drive down. She just did not feel good. I could tell by looking at her.

After we got home, Jim buried her in our yard and then today I went out and put a little flower over her grave spot. I'm sure it will all get raked over and smoothed out soon enough, but for now, it made me feel better to fix her a little grave and say goodbye.

Goodbye, Mitzi. You were a good little friend. I will miss you!

I am sorry to hear that you have lost your little friend. It's amazing how attached you can get to the little beasts, isn't it? Jon and I worry about what we will do when we have to give up our little dogs. Do you think you will get another one, sometime?

Tamra I really feel bad for you. My mom had her little poodles for 15 & 16 years and when we had to put them down she was devastated. I just remember her feeling like no one really understood and how many people just act like it was "no big deal" after all it's only a dog/animal. But you do get attached and loved them. So I'm sorry for yours and Jims loss. DJ has that blasted dog Cheech and left her with us for one year then when I was gone the other night he came home and took her back. I was quite upset because I took care of him and grew attached to him and so did Teele. But I will see him again.
Again thanks for the post and I'm so sorry for your loss.

Oh...now I'm crying real tears. Sad ones. That was a good post. She was a good little pup. I loved her and I will miss her.
I love the flowers on her grave. I remember doing the same thing for Flopsie when she died. We've had some good dogs over the years...and satanic ones (Dottie).
I'm also sorry that you had to put her down, but in that last picture she sure did look pretty miserable. She looks like she was in pain. Poor little thing.
I love you mom. It will be ok and you did the right thing.
